The importance of keeping your tongue clean

The human mouth is home to 700 species of microorganisms and most of them are found on the tongue due to the structure and texture of the tongue. The front surface of a tongue is covered with papillae (small bumps) which makes the perfect environment for bacteria to live and grow.

The tongue is vital for chewing, swallowing, tasting, speech and even breathing while you are asleep. Even though the tongue plays an important role in oral health, most of us don’t give it the attention it deserves.

When bad bacteria, food debris and dead cells get trapped between the papillae on the surface of your tongue it can lead to dental and health problems. A dirty tongue can appear discoloured and feel hairy. Therefore, your mouth can never be truly clean unless you incorporate tongue cleaning in your daily oral care routine.

The benefits of taking care of your tongue:

Fresh breath

The most common problem of an unclean tongue is bad breath (halitosis). Having bad breath can affect your self-esteem, relationships, and quality of life. Cleaning your tongue daily can help eliminate odour-causing germs and make your breath fresher.

Taste enhancing

When a biofilm of bacteria builds up on the surface of your tongue, it can block your taste buds and dramatically alter how your food and drinks taste. Removing the biofilm allows you to taste and enjoy what you are eating and drinking.

Prevent tooth decay

Even if you brush and floss regularly, you can still get oral cavities if you neglect cleaning your tongue. Bad bacteria left on the tongue can eventually stick and harden on your tooth surfaces, resulting in calculus formation. Calculus overtime destroys enamel and causes cavities!

Reduce oral thrush

White patches can appear on the tongue when bacteria levels are left to multiply. Cleaning your tongue, in combination with antifungal medications, can help treat and prevent oral thrush.

Boost your immunity

Cleaning your tongue daily can stop toxins from entering your body. A clean tongue helps your immune system and digestive health.

The Tongue Scraper dental tool

The best way to clean your tongue is by using a tongue scraper. This easy-to-use dental tool is designed to remove bacteria and food debris. You simply hold the tongue scraper handle, stick out your tongue, place the scraper at the back of the tongue and then gently push the scraper forward while applying light pressure. Rinse the scraper under warm water to remove any unwanted residue. Repeat the same process 2 to 5 times.
